The world should join Portugal

Way back in 2001 a fellow E.U member became one of the first country's  to decriminalize all drugs, Portugal now almost 15 years later has not only seen a 'decline' in overall drug consumption but also has a reduction in drug related deaths. Diseases are also declining. This model they have introduced is clearly working. Isn't it time the world followed Portugal's incredibly brave move and defeat its war on drugs by making it non existing. The future for children would be healthier as schools and health centers could gather more information to assist addicts or abusers getting the help they really need, while educating children on the harmful effects of drugs. Instead of jailing our fellow humans and forcing them into a life of crime, we should once again be following Portugal by sending users to therapy. In the long run therapy is less of a cost on the state than prison. As it costs way more to lock up a human for those drugs they consume. Source : http://ww

Study shows marijuana’s long-term effects on the brain

The effects of chronic marijuana use on the brain may depend on age of first use and duration of use, according to researchers at the Center for BrainHealth at The University of Texas at Dallas. In a paper published today in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), researchers for the first time comprehensively describe existing abnormalities in brain function and structure of long-term marijuana users with multiple magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques. Findings show chronic marijuana users have smaller brain volume in the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC), a part of the brain commonly associated with addiction, but also increased brain connectivity. “We have seen a steady increase in the incidence of marijuana use since 2007,“said Dr. Francesca Filbey , Associate Professor in the School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences at the University of Texas at Dallas and Director of the Cognitive Neuroscience Research in Addictive Disorders at the Center for BrainHealth

Cannabis for your pets

recreational use of marijuana ramps up, entrepreneurs are trying their hand at cashing in on the green rush. At the East Coast Cannabis Business Expo in midtown Manhattan, creative start-ups are finding new applications for c annabidiol —or CBD, for short —the cannabis compound that has medical properties. That compound, CBD, should not be confused with another marijuana compound tetrahydrocannabinol or THC, which is the component that causes users to get high. Some unique ventures are focused on CBD-related, medical applications. One small business is targeting cannabis treatments for injured athletes; while another is focusing on cannabis products for pets Source: http://www.cnbc.com/id/102079015 #.

Sleep and Medicinal Cannabis

INVESTIGATOR: Sean Drummond, Ph.D. STUDY LOCATION: University of California, San Diego PROJECT TITLE: Sleep and Medicinal Cannabis PROJECT TYPE: Clinical Study, Sub-Study STATUS: COMPLETE RESULTS: The full results of this study are in preparation. No preliminary results are available at this time ABSTRACT: Recently, there has been renewed scientific interest in examining the medical efficacy of cannabis in specific patient populations. For, example, both the Institute of Medicine and the NIH recently reported medicinal cannabis might be useful in the treatment of pain in HIV+ patients. HIV+ patients experience a number of clinical sequelae to the infection, even when they are otherwise considered clinically "asymptomatic." Perhaps one of the earliest sequelae is sleep abnormality. It is estimated that 73% to 90% of HIV+ patients experience significantly disrupted sleep and sleep quality has been shown to predict long-term outcome in HIV+ patients. This study
