Cannabis treatment for motor and non-motor symptoms of Parkinson disease: an open-label observational study.

specific motor symptoms revealed significant improvement after treatment with Cannabis

Inhaling whole-plant cannabis provides symptomatic relief in patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD), according to observational trial data published in the March/April edition of the journal Clinical Neuropharmacology. Parkinson’s is a progressive disorder of the central nervous system that results in tremor, slowed movement, and muscle rigidity. Investigators at Tel Aviv University, Department of Neurology evaluated Parkinson’s disease symptoms in 22 patients at baseline and 30-minutes after inhaling cannabis. Researchers reported that inhaled cannabis was associated with “significant improvement after treatment in tremor, rigidity, and bradykinsea (slowness of movement). There was also significant improvement of sleep and pain scores. No significant adverse effects of the drug were observed.” They concluded: “[T]his observational study is the first to report an amelioration of both motor and non–motor symptoms in patients with PD treated with cannabis. The study opens new venues for treatment strategies in PD especially in patients refractory to current medications.” Israel has formally allowed for the licensed production and distribution of the substance for therapeutic purposes since 2011. Abstract

OBJECTIVE:

The use of cannabis as a therapeutic agent for various medical conditions has been well documented. However, clinical trials in patients with Parkinson disease (PD) have yielded conflicting results. The aim of the present open-label observational study was to assess the clinical effect of cannabis on motor and non-motor symptoms of PD.

METHODS:

Twenty-two patients with PD attending the motor disorder clinic of a tertiary medical center in 2011 to 2012 were evaluated at baseline and 30 minutes after smoking cannabis using the following battery: Unified Parkinson Disease Rating Scale, visual analog scale, present pain intensity scale, Short-Form McGill Pain Questionnaire, as well as Medical Cannabis Survey National Drug and Alcohol Research Center Questionnaire.

RESULTS:

Mean (SD) total score on the motor Unified Parkinson Disease Rating Scale score improved significantly from 33.1 (13.8) at baseline to 23.2 (10.5) after cannabis consumption (t = 5.9; P < 0.001). Analysis of specific motor symptoms revealed significant improvement after treatment in tremor (P < 0.001), rigidity (P = 0.004), and bradykinesia (P < 0.001).

CONCLUSIONS:

There was also significant improvement of sleep and pain scores. No significant adverse effects of the drug were observed. The study suggests that cannabis might have a place in the therapeutic armamentarium of PD. Larger, controlled studies are needed to verify the results

So many humans locked away due to carrying or using some illegal drugs, I'm not in any way saying do drugs! Drugs are great ! But really this so called war on drugs needs to end.  If we regulate all drugs it becomes safer An creates jobs. More help for addicts, more education for the youths. Kids thinking these days why stay in school when they can make more in a month than there teacher does in a year. I could have chose that route but I did not go fully..  I sold some hash held some ecstasy got really lucky not to be set up. Thankfully that's in the past but I still buy cannabis regularly with no idea where it comes from or who grew it. I wish I knew the strain. Anyway be like cocaine on the streets you can have pure or you can have coke. Drugs don't even no what they are anymore. But people stil living and going prison. Is this no life lesson ? The drug ...
